A throwing block or pulley as it can also be called is an ingenious thing. It has several uses, but mainly it is to double the pulling power. This is easily done by passing the rope through the shore block and back to the car where the winch is attached. Then you achieve double the pulling power of what your winch can do on “single-line” – the disadvantage is of course that it goes half as fast.
A throwing block can of course also be used to swing the drag line if you are in a difficult position, attach the throwing block to a short strap in a tree and you have much more freedom in where you can place the car that pulls up.
A throwing block saves the winch from an enormous load and is certainly something that should be with you on a trip if you have to get through a difficult route.
